Today we had the Amazing Bike Guy come and talk about the history of bikes through the years.

Shane was incredibly knowledgeable and entertaining. He also showed a talent for bike riding too.

The Bone Shaker

This bike was known as the Bone Shaker because riding this machine was supposed to make your bones shake.

It had pedals mounted to the front shell and when you reached high speeds or went down hill you could pop your legs up to keep them out of the way - safety first!

The Penny Farthing

The Penny Farthing was named after the coins. The penny was the big wheel and the farthing was the small wheel.  It was manufactured around 1871 and became a very popular bike. It was mainly ridden by men.

Making and creating cars....

Our fantastic student teacher - Miss Hodder - set us a challenge.

We had to create a vehicle using card, skewers and milk bottle lids.

We had free range of our designs and could work by ourselves or with a buddy.

We are creating today with the hope of testing tomorrow.

Small Wheels Day

Yesterday was small wheels day.

We all brought scooters, trolleys, rollerblades and skateboards and went crazy for an hour.

We scooted over decks, through the carpark and around the courts.

Sky high task

This term our topic is transport.

We have been looking at areas of transport that interest us.

Today Miss Hodder set us a challenge to create an aircraft using paper, straws, Sellotape and paper clips.

She got the idea from the BP Challenge website.

This is us in the design stage.

How to survive a tornado

Tornadoes are knowen as the most dangerous storm in the world.

First if there is a tornado warning or if you see a tornado  - stop what you're doing straight away then grab you're survival kit and first aid kit.

Next go into your safety cabinet - if you don't have a safety cabinet go into you're basement . 

Cover yourself in a mattress it will protect you from flying objects.

Finally once the storm is over SLOWLY come out of you're basement or safety cabinet . 

make sure there is no debris on top of you.

Tornadoes are the most dangerous storm in the world so it's best to stay inside.

Matariki Day

Last week we celebrated the beginning of Matariki.

The school had 8 activities that the children rotated around.

We had art activities, cloak making, kite making and even Matariki maths.

In room 8 we had the proud job of making Manu tuku tuku.

First Aid Brigade

Last week we were lucky  enough to be offered a day of first aid training for the year 5 and year 6 children with the Red Cross.

Our trainer Gail was so knowledgable, and made the day so practical.

Junior school cross country

Well, what a great day!

We had our school cross country, and had students from room 8 out to support and encourage the juniors.

They were a great help, and did a fabulous job.

Anzac Day

We studied the history of ANZAC Day last week. 

We thought we would look at the poem In Flanders Field, and create poppy art, as well as looking at Private Simpson and how he would transfer wounded soldiers down to the medical tent through Schrapnel Valley using his donkey.

The class also wrote letters home to their families as soldiers. Check out individual blogs.

Reni took things to a visual level by creating the landing using Lego!

Brain Hats

We have been studying the human body, and spent time exploring how our brain works.

We decided to make brain hats, so it was easier to remember what the different parts of our brain are, and how they work.

Buddy Reading with Room 3

Every Friday, we buddy read with room 3. It is a heap of fun, and we love to hear the great stories that they share at the end of the session.

Making hands

We are learning about the body and how it works.

We have been exploring the skeleton and muscles and tendons.

We wanted to know how the hand worked and why we didn't have muscles in our hands, so we decided to create a model of a hand.

We cut out shapes of our hands, and used straws as the skeleton and strings as the tendons.

We had to cut slots so we could have knuckles and the fingers would bend.
